Tony Ahern, Chief Executive Officer of St John Ambulance Western Australia has advised that Clinical Services Director Professor Ian Jacobs passed away over the weekend. He advised that Ian was on-road with one of their clinical managers on Friday night where on arrival at Royal Perth Hospital with a critical trauma patient Ian himself collapsed. The cause was a brain haemorrhage and Ian never regained consciousness. He was confirmed as brain dead and his life support turned off. Ian passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
In addition to his role at St John, Ian was Professor of Resuscitation and Pre-Hospital Care at Curtin University. He was also the national chair of the Australian Resuscitation Council and co-chair of the International Liaison Committee on resuscitation.
Ian was a great supporter of Paramedics Australasia and a valued friend and colleague to many of us. Along with the team at St John we are shocked and stunned by Ian’s sudden passing and he will be sadly missed.
Ian’s funeral will be held in Perth on Friday 24th of October, a funeral notice is available here (please note this link contains updated details since our initial posting). The PA Board and members will be well represented at this funeral and a full Vale will be published in the summer issue of Response.
