On Wednesday 28 August, Paramedics Australasia Executive Member Mick Davis AM and National Policy Advisor Ray Bange HFPA met with the Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health and Ageing, Professor Chris Baggoley AO.
Discussions covered recent developments in paramedicine and progress towards the national registration of paramedics including recent regulatory developments in South Australia, Tasmania and the proposed Australia-wide Code of Conduct for unregistered health practitioners .
The importance of paramedic registration as a significant contributor to public safety was discussed, as well as the clarification of roles through the paramedicine role descriptions developed by Paramedics Australasia. Mention was made of the forthcoming international conference being convened by Paramedics Australasia in Canberra.
The discussions were useful in informing both parties. Professor Baggoley expressed his support for the profession and a desire to see continued liaison and information sharing. He looked forward to meeting members at the time of the Canberra Conference.
