Women paramedics – 30 years on the job with Ambulance Victoria

In July 1983, Andrea Wyatt became one of the first two women to join the ranks of Ambulance Victoria. A few months later in October she was joined by Mel Buckingham, who became the first ambulance officer in country Victoria.

Thirty years on, women paramedics make up 47 per cent of Ambulance Victoria staff. Ambulance Victoria’s CEO Tony Walker said, “Our women have proved themselves well equal to any male in this organisation.”
